Chapter 4: Joshin Kokyu-Ho: Breathing into the Hara

This traditional Japanese Reiki meditation sits at the heart of Chapter 4. It invites you to work deeply with the breath as both a healing tool and a vehicle for spiritual awakening. Joshin Kokyu-Ho literally means “technique for purification of the spirit through breathing.” But this is not just breathwork. It is a practice of grounding, centering, and deepening your connection to the energetic core of the body: the hara.

Using diaphragmatic breathing, you are guided to draw the breath down into the belly, allowing the energy of Reiki to accumulate and settle at your centre. This is the foundation for both a stable mind and an open energetic field. As the breath flows in, you connect to the life force. As it flows out, you let go. With each cycle, awareness expands and the channels through which Reiki flows become more refined.

Practising this meditation over time strengthens the central energy channel, calms the nervous system, and brings your awareness fully into the here and now. The focus on the hara helps you become less reactive, more grounded, and able to meet the world with a clear and steady presence. It is especially recommended for Reiki practitioners who want to enhance their ability to channel energy from a place of true inner stillness.
