If you’re looking to learn Reiki, obviously you’re going to want to know what your investment is. So, how much does Reiki cost?
There are a wide variety of prices out there in the market, depending on a variety of factors. Let’s break the costs down and take a look at what you should consider before diving in.
Levels of Training.
It’s important to understand how Reiki training is structured. Typically, Reiki is taught in three levels, each building on the teachings of the last. The three levels are:
Level 1
The beginner’s level and where you need to start. It’s during this class that you’ll first learn how to channel the energy and use it for self-healing and bringing healing to others. In the better training courses, you will also be encouraged and given teachings and methods for starting a solid mindfulness meditation practice.
Level 2
This is the professional practitioner level, allowing you to work professionally with your Reiki abilities with paying clients. In this deeper dive into the system of Reiki, you’ll learn about the Reiki symbols and how to apply them in a healing context. You’ll also learn how to do distant Reiki treatments. In higher quality courses you’ll also learn about using the symbols as aids for deepening your meditation practice, as well as extending your mindfulness practice.
Level 3
This is the master’s level (more properly ‘teacher’s level’ as no one ‘masters’ Reiki!). Essentially, this is the level where you learn how to teach others and perform the critical Reiki attunements (the process you take your students through so that they can practice Reiki themselves). The final Reiki symbol is introduced at this level, and you should be taken on a journey of deepening your own meditation and Reiki practice.
How Much Does It Cost to Learn Reiki?
The cost of learning Reiki can vary a lot depending on where you live, who your teacher is, and how you take the course (online or in person). Here’s what you can expect:
Reiki Level 1: On the whole, online training tends to be cheaper than in-person training, but you also need to factor in the length of the training and the experience of the teacher. Costs typically range between around £80 to £280 for a two-day class. If you’re paying for a class that lasts just for a morning or an afternoon (2 to 3 hours), then you should expect to pay around £50/£60, but don’t expect anything very substantive in such a short course. A lot of what you need is going to be left out because you simply can’t cover the whole level 1 teaching in such a short amount of time.
Reiki Level 2: The teachings are more complex at this level. Reiki level 2 is essentially the true heart of the system, and there is an awful lot to get through at this level. A full two-day training course should cost you around £180 to £300. Again, as with Level 1, short morning/afternoon classes are available, that might cost you anything between £60 to £100 but again, the quality of the training will be highly suspect. It’s impossible to get through all the level 2 teachings in this amount of time. It’s also possible to take this level as an online course, as well as in-person.
Reiki Level 3: Becoming a Reiki Teacher (Master) can cost anywhere between £450 to £1500. The cost of the course depends on how comprehensive the training is and on the reputation of the teacher. This level is a big commitment and can take many months to complete. Again, there are budget courses available out there, usually lasting anything from an afternoon to a full day that can cost around £100 to £200 but again, you’re getting what you pay for: very limited training of poor quality with a lot of the essentials missing. As with the first two levels, this level can also be taken online.
Online training has revolutionised the way information and training is delivered over the last few years, and this is true in the field of Reiki, as much as any other discipline. Check out sites such as Udemy or Coursera for courses that are offered, often at a fraction of the price for a traditional face-to-face teaching. Do be mindful of the length of the training, however. There are courses available on Udemy for instance, where you can go from Reiki level 1 to Reiki level 3 in around 5 or 6 hours. It simply isn’t possible to teach those levels effectively in such a ridiculously short amount of time. Whilst online training does cut the amount of time it takes to deliver a class, it sure doesn’t cut it that much! Such courses might offer a good intro to Reiki but you’re not going to get the depth or quality that you would in a face-to-face training environment or online with someone teaching live.
Why Does the Cost Vary So Much?
Several factors influence how much you’ll pay for Reiki training:
The experience of the teacher: A seasoned Reiki teacher with a strong following and years of experience under their belt, might charge more than someone just starting on their journey.
Location: If you’re in a big city, expect to pay more than if you were located in a smaller town. Costs can also vary considerably from one country to another.
Type of Training: Online courses tend to be cheaper than face-to-face because the teacher doesn’t have so many overheads.
Is It Worth Paying More for Quality Training?
It’s natural to look for the best deal, but when it comes to Reiki training, length of training and quality can make a big difference. A more expensive course might be worth it if it means learning from a well-regarded teacher who provides comprehensive training and ongoing support. The ongoing support could be critical and I always make sure my students are aware that this is a lifetime commitment to their progress in the system.
One of the most destructive elements within the practice of Reiki is the widespread availability of quickie-training that offers little and encourages the bar to drop ever lower, diminishing the standard and standing of Reiki globally.
Is Learning Reiki a One-Time Expense?
Once you can practice Reiki, you’ve got the ability forever. No one can take it away, you can’t give it away, it doesn’t degrade over time, it’s there as a permanent change within your subtle energy body for the rest of your life, for you to call on whenever you choose. Of course, if you wish to take your training further, there will be the additional cost of those courses.
Final Thoughts
Learning Reiki is an investment in yourself and your ability to bring healing and balance into your life and the lives of others. It’s also an investment in your spiritual journey which will be enhanced on all levels if you find a Reiki teacher who understands the system beyond simple hands-on healing. Unfortunately, there are very few of those around.
Whilst the cost of Reiki training can vary, finding the right course and teacher is essential. Consider not only your budget but also what you want to get out of the training. Do you want to learn it well and gain the maximum benefit from what the system has to offer or are you happy to just gain the ability to practice hands-on healing and learn how to give a basic treatment?
The real value in the system comes from the impact that it can have on your life, but why not equip yourself properly to enhance your journey right at the start?
