Self-sabotage often develops when your mind and body use an old protective strategy to preserve safety, familiarity, belonging, or control. The behaviour may interfere with something you genuinely want, yet it follows a logic your system learned through earlier experience. You decide to apply for the job, finish the project, promote your work, improve your finances, or leave a situation that has drained you for years. The decision feels clear while it remains an idea, but action brings hesitation, distraction, or a convincing reason to wait. After several rounds of the same sequence, the label self-sabotage can feel accurate because your behaviour repeatedly blocks progress. A useful explanation needs to go further and identify what the behaviour achieves in the moment, because that purpose determines what will help.
