Work, money, health, relationships, grief, family pressure and practical responsibility all matter. None of those things are experienced in a neutral way. They’re received through your emotional state, nervous system, memories, beliefs, attention, identity and level of awareness.

Many Christians feel drawn to Reiki because it appears gentle, compassionate, and healing. At the same time, many feel cautious. They may have heard that Reiki is New Age, spiritually unsafe, incompatible with Christianity, or connected with angels, spirit guides, symbols, or unseen forces. The question is understandable: Can Christians practise Reiki? The answer depends on what kind of Reiki someone is learning, how the teacher explains it, what’s been added around it, and how it sits with that person’s conscience and church tradition.

Reiki symbols are one of the most misunderstood parts of the system. They’re often presented as mysterious objects with inherent power, or expanded into collections of forms that claim to do everything from healing to protection to manifestation. That isn’t how Reiki works, and it isn’t what the symbols are for. To understand what Reiki symbols actually are, they have to be placed within the structure of the training they belong to. Once they’re separated from that structure, they’re very quickly misinterpreted. They become objects of projection rather than elements within a disciplined method. The issue isn’t that the symbols are difficult to understand. The issue is that they’re usually explained outside of the context that gives them meaning.

Recognised Buddhist scholarship does not currently verify the full historical origins of the Buddho system. We can trace its modern transmission with more certainty through the Reiki Jin Kei Do lineage, particularly through Seiji Takamori and Dr. Ranga Premaratna. Within Reiki Jin Kei Do, practitioners understand Buddho as a deeper meditative and energetic system connected to Avalokiteshvara, Mt. Kurama, and the spiritual roots of Reiki. These teachings belong to the lineage itself and hold meaning within that context, but independently verified historical records do not support them.

People are trying to become more aware. They take up meditation, experiment with drawing or other creative practices, and explore Reiki or energy work. Progress often feels inconsistent. Most people assume these practices are doing the same thing. That assumption is what causes progress to stall. Each one trains awareness in a different way. When that distinction is not clear, it is easy to stop too early or assume something is not working, when in reality a different capacity is being developed.

Reiki is usually introduced as a healing method. Practitioners place their hands on or near the body to support relaxation and restore balance, and the practice is commonly described as a form of energy healing. This explanation captures part of the system, yet it does not fully describe what Reiki is. At a deeper level Reiki functions as a discipline for training awareness. The hands-on aspect of the practice provides a structure through which attention becomes steady, the mind grows quiet, and subtle aspects of experience begin to reveal themselves. When approached in this way Reiki begins to resemble a contemplative practice concerned with consciousness rather than a technique directed toward symptoms.

This is one of the most common concerns people have about Reiki. Many assume it involves angels, spirit guides, ascended masters, or unseen helpers working through the practitioner. Others avoid it entirely because they do not want involvement with spirits of any kind. Traditional Reiki does not require spirit guides or external entities in order to function. The confusion comes from what has been layered onto the system over time.
